Extraordinary Chandeliers

13 01 2011

Ask anyone and they’ll tell you that lighting is a key component to any design. You can pick out the furniture, paint the walls, and hang window treatments, but without the right lighting, the space won’t look quite right. Lighting is an opportunity to make a statement. It has to serve the function of its basic principle: to light a room. But the actual functionality of a fixture is just a small part of lighting. You can change the mood of a space by altering the color temperature, determining how much light you will bring in, and ultimately determine the style of a room by determining what kind of fixture you will use.

Well all know that a brass scroll candelabra fixture screams 1990s traditional design. (No offense to those who still have those in their dining room). The same goes for an arts and crafts type lighting with its glass plated shades giving it that perfect lantern glow. Lighting can define a style, but today, more than ever, people are pushing the boundaries as far as lighting design is concerned. We are entering the era where being different and quirky is accepted, and not just in the art world. The general public is actually seeking out unique pieces to showcase their input on design.

Here I have a few images that truly embrace the uniqueness of design. Each one is different and extraordinary in its own right.

1) The Rock-coco Pendant by Demakersvan & Studio Kees: This LED powered chandelier is perfectly in keeping with the Rococo philosophy of ‘everything to the excess’. Lavish living to the extreme. This chandelier embodies these ideals by pushing the boundaries of the fixture not only aesthetically, but physically. It is the first chandelier to every be 100% outdoor proof. Hang this fixture above an outdoor hot tub for that high glam look.

2) The Rain Chandelier by Ilanel Design Studio: This dual purpose fixture is both a light and a set of chimes. The long perforated aluminum tubes emit glistening light while also acting as a beautiful, serene chime fixture.

3) .PSLAB Hanging Fixtures: These metallic lights are made to replicate a forest with its twig like features. The light itself breaks out of the tops of the branches making for a very unique ceiling pendant application.

4) Morph Chandelier by Alicja Wasielewksa: This piece is composed of an ultra-modern fiber optic technology where multiple pieces have been somewhat “crocheted” together.

5) Mirror Chandelier by Studio Roso: This piece is comprised of 12,000 metalized discs and was designed specifically for the Ames Boutique Hotel in Boston. Each disc is designed to move with the breeze as patrons walk in and out of the front door.

6) DecanterLights by Lee Broom: These authentic crystal decanters are sourced from antique markets and vintage shops where they are left nearly transparent or lightly polished with a gold finish.
